Salaat, Jumu’ah & Ramadan

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“The five (daily) salaat, and the Jumu’ah to (the next) Jumu’ah, and Ramadan to (the next) Ramadan are expiations (for sins) committed between them, as long as you stay away from the major sins.”  [Saheeh Muslim, 233]

1. Ibn Mas’ood رضي الله عنه narrated that:

“A man from the Companions kissed a woman (to whom he was not married), so he came to the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم and informed him about it. Then the Ayah was revealed:

“And perform the Salat at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night (i.e. the five compulsory Salat). Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds.” [Hud, 114]

The man (asked the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم ), ‘Is this for me (only)?’ The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم replied, ‘It is for all of my Ummah (who perform the deeds).’ [Saheeh Al-Bukhari, 4687]

This Ayah of the Qur’an has been quoted here to stress that the performance of salaat leads to expiation of sins, but only for minor sins because the major sins will not be forgiven without sincere repentance.

2. Imam Nawawi رحمه الله تعالى in his ‘Sharh of Saheeh Muslim’ commented on the original hadeeth and said about expiation between the two jumu’ahs:

“The scholars said that what is meant by his being forgiven between the two Jumu’ahs and three more days is that a good deed is worth ten like it, so he will be rewarded with ten hasanaat for each of the good deeds that he did on Friday. Some of our companions said: what is meant by ‘what is between the two Jumu’ahs’ is from Jumu’ah prayer and the khutbah until the same time on the following Friday, so that it will be seven days, no more and no less, then three days are added making ten in all.”

3. He رحمه الله تعالى also said about expiation between the two Ramadans:

[Sharh Saheeh Muslim, ‘Kitab Tahaarah’, 233]

May Allaah enable us to safeguard our salaat and jumu’ah and allow us to witness next year’s Ramadan. Ameen.
