Entering the last ten days

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله

A’ishah رضّى الله عنها narrated that:

كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخل العشر شد مئزره وأحيا ليله وأيقظ أهله

“When he entered the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم would tighten his waist (cloth) and stay up at night and wake his family.” [Saheeh al-Bukhari, 2024]

“tighten his wait (cloth)” – Meaning that he صلى الله عليه و سلم would withdraw from his women (and not engage in any relations with them).

“and stay up at night” – Meaning that he صلى الله عليه و سلم would use the opportunity (of lengthening the night) in order to engage in much ibadah. It is said that ‘sleep is the brother of death’ and it is also related (in a hadeeth) that we should not make our houses into graves, thus we should not waste this occasion (of the last ten days of Ramadan) to sleep and miss the immense rewards attached to them.

“and wake his family” * – Meaning waking them up for salah. Zaynab bint Umm Salamah رضّى الله عنها narrated that:

لم يكن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا بقي من رمضان عشرة أيام يدع أحدا من أهله يطيق القيام إلا أقامه

A’ishah رضّى الله عنها also narrated that:

كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يجتهد في العشر الأواخر ما لا يجتهد في غيرها

“The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه و سلم did not strive more (at any other time) as he did in the last ten days of Ramadan” [graded as ‘hasan ghareeb’ by At-Tirmidhi]

* Shaykh Dr. Abd Al-Hayy Yusuf حفظه الله تعالى was asked: “What does it mean by the hadeeth “When he صلى الله عليه وسلم entered the last ten days (of Ramadan), he would tighten his waist and stay up at night and wake his family”

He replied:

المراد والله أعلم أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في العشر الأخيرة من رمضان يشمّر للعبادة ويجتهد بالسهر في الليل للذكر والصلاة، ويوقظ أزواجه ليشاركنه في اغتنام تلك الليالي الفاضلة. وقول عائشة ـ رضي الله عنها ـ: ”شدَّ مئزره” المراد اعتزال النساء. وقال الخطابي: ”يحتمل أن يريد به الجدَّ في العبادة، كما يقال: شددت لهذا الأمر مئزري أي: تشمَّرت له”، وقولها: ”وأحيا ليله” أي: سهِره فأحياه بالطاعة، وأحيا نفسه بسهره فيه، لأن النوم أخو الموت
