Sweetness of…

.

…the Qur’an

Imam at- Tabari رحمه الله تعالى said in his ‘Jaami’ al-Bayan’:

“I am amazed with one who recites the Qur’an and he does not learn its ta’weel (i.e. tafseer), how (then) will he taste the sweetness of his recitation?”  [see ‘Mu’jam al-Adbaa’, 63/18]

Abu ‘Abd-al Rahman Aslami said:

“We learned the Qur’an from some people who told us that they used to learn ten Ayaat of the Qur’an and never exceeded them; until they had understood their meaning and acted upon them; however, people who come after us, will inherit the Qur’an (i.e. read it) as one drinks water, but it will not pass their throats (i.e. they will not act upon it).” [Siyar a’laam an-Nubalaa’ 4/269]

Abul-Aaliyah said:

“There will come a time upon the people when the Qur’an shall become spoilt (and disappear) from their chests, nor will they find sweetness or delight in it. If they fall short in what they’ve been commanded, they say ‘Allaah is All-Forgiving and He is the Most Merciful’ and if they do what they’ve been prohibited, they say ‘We shall be forgiven for we have not associated anything in worship with Allaah.’ Their entire affair is covetousness with no truth (or sincerity), they wear sheep’s clothing over the hearts of wolves. The best of them in his Deen ends up being deceptive (and hypocritical).” [Imam Ahmad, ‘Kitab az-Zuhd’, p. 241-242]

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

“There is nothing more beneficial for the heart than reading the Qur’an and with contemplation and reflection… If people were to possess a realisation of what recitation of the Qur’an with contemplation contains, they would devote themselves to it at the expense of anything else. When the person reads it with reflection and he comes across an Ayah that he is in need of, for the cure of his heart, he repeats it, even if he does so a hundred times or the whole night. Thus, to recite a single Ayah of the Qur’an with contemplation and reflection is better than reciting the Qur’an to completion without any contemplation or reflection. It is also more beneficial for the heart and more conducive to attaining faith and tasting the sweetness of the Qur’an…” [Miftaah Daar as-Sa’aadah, 1/358]

May Allaah make this Ramadan a means of coming close to His Magnificent Book and creating an ever-lasting bond with it!
