…until he leaves the innovation

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وصحبه ومن تبع هداه وبعد

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

إن الله حجب التوبة عن كل صاحب بدعة حتى يدع بدعته

“Allaah will block (veil) the repentance of the companion of innovation (i.e. an innovator) until he leaves the innovation.”

[Tabarani, Mua’jam al-Kabeer. ; see also Ibn Majah in his Muqadimah, 50; Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman, 8837; Mu’jam az-Zawa’id. 1/99 – graded as hasan in ‘Saheeh at-Targheeb wat-Tahreeb’, 1/54]

1. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ماليس منه فهو رد

Whoever introduces into our matter (i.e. Deen) that which is not a part of it, will have it rejected.” [Saheel al-Bukhari and Muslim]

This hadeeth is from the Jawami’ al-Kalim and establishes many principles in the Deen of al-Islam. Ibn Rajab said regarding this hadeeth:

كل من أحدث شيئاُ ونسبه إلى الدين، ولم يكن له أصل من الدين يرجع إليه فهو ضلالة والدين منه بريء

“All new things attributed to the Deen that are not from the origins of the Deen is going astray and the Deen is innocent from them.”  [Jaami’ al-Uloom wal-Hikam, 1/266]

2. Mu’ad ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه said:

إياكم وما ابتُدع فإن ما ابتدع ضلال

“Beware of invented (matters) for they are misguidance.” [Abu Da’wud, 4611]
The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said about the Merits of Madinah al-Munawara:

“…It is something serious to make any innovation in it, (and he who does it) there is upon him the Curse of Allaah and that of the Angels and of all mankind. Allaah will not accept from him (i.e. the innovator) on the Day of Resurrection either obligatory acts or the supererogatory acts. (Ibn Anas added: Or he accommodates an innovator.)” [Saheeh Muslim, 3159]

3. The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم delivered a khutbah in which his eyes became red, his voice rose and his anger increased so that he was like one giving a warning against the enemy and saying: “The enemy has made a morning attack on you and in the evening too.” He would also say: “The last Hour and I have been sent like these two,” and he would join his forefinger and middle finger. He would continue: “The best speech is in the Book of Allaah and the best guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad. The most evil of affairs are innovations; and every innovation is a leading astray (in another version: ‘and every leading astray is in the Hell-fire’).” [Saheeh Muslim, 1885]

4. Naafi’ (the freed slave of Ibn ‘Umar ) narrated that Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنه said:

كل بدعة ضلالة وإن رآها الناس حسنة

“Every bid’ah is misguidance even if the people deem it to be good.” [Islah al-Masajid, 13]

5. Imam Malik رحمه الله تعالى said:

من ابتدع بالاسلام بدعة واحدة فقد زمع أن محمد خان رسالة

“He who innovates something in Islam (while deeming it to part of it) has claimed that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم has betrayed his trust to deliver the Message.”

And the evidence for this is (the Saying of Allaah):

الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الأِسْلاَمَ دِينا

“This day, I have perfected your Deen for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your Deen.” (Al-Ma’idah: 3)

So, whatever was not part of the Deen on that day, can not be part of the Deen today.”

6. Imam Malik also said:

وخير أمور الدين ما كان سنة وشر الأمور المحدثات البــدع

“And the best affairs in the Deen was (from) Sunnah, and the evil of affairs is (from) newly invented matters.” [Al-I’tisam, 1/115]

7. Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) was asked the following:

Question: “Which o­ne has the greater punishment: The sinners or the innovators?”

Answer: The innovators have a greater punishment, for verily innovation is more severe than mutiny. Hence, innovation is more beloved to the Shaytaan than mutiny. For surely the sinner repents.

Sufyaan Ath-Thawree may Allah bestow mercy upon him said: “Innovation is more beloved to Iblees (Shaytaan) than mutiny; for verily mutiny is repented from and innovation is not repented from.” [Majmoo Fatawaa vol.11 pg.472]

As for the innovator, then it is rare that he repents. Because he (the innovator) thinks that he is upon truth opposed to the sinner who knows that he is a sinner and commits mutiny. As for the innovator, he sees himself as being a follower, and that he is upon obedience. Thus, for that reason innovation – and the protection is with Allah – is more evil than mutiny. Hence for that reason the Salaf used to warn against sitting with the innovator.

Al-Hassan Al-Basree may Allah bestow mercy upon him said: “Do not sit with the companion of innovation; for verily he will sicken your heart.” [Al-Bi’dah wan Nahee ‘Anhaa pg.54]

Because they have an affect o­n those who sit with them and their danger is severe. Without a doubt innovation is more evil than mutiny, and the danger of the innovator is greater upon the people than the sinner and for this reason the Salaf said: “Thriftiness with the sunnah is better than perseverance upon innovation.”
