بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وصحبه ومن تبع هداه وبعد
Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says in Al-Qur’an:
وَلَن تَرْضَى عَنكَ الْيَهُودُ وَلاَ النَّصَارَى حَتَّى تَتَّبِعَ مِلَّتَهُمْ قُلْ إِنَّ هُدَى اللّهِ هُوَ الْهُدَى وَلَئِنِ اتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَاءهُم بَعْدَ الَّذِي جَاءكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ مَا لَكَ مِنَ اللّهِ مِن وَلِيٍّ وَلاَ نَصِيرٍ
“And never will the Jews nor the Christians will be pleased with you until you follow their religion. Say, “Indeed, the Guidance of Allaah is the (only) Guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allaah no Wali (protector or guardian) or helper.” [Surat al-Baqarah:120]
The Imam of Yemen, Ash-Shawkani رحمه الله تعالى commented upon this ayah by saying:
الآية من الوعيد الشديد الذي ترجف له القلوب وتتصدع منه الأفئدة ما يوجب على أهل العلم الحاملين لحجج الله سبحانه والقائمين ببيان شرائعه ترك الدهان لأهل البدع المتمذهبين بمذاهب السوء التاركين للعمل بالكتاب والسنة المؤثرين لمحض الرأي عليهما فإن
“In this ayah is a severe threat that makes the hearts tremble and from which the hearts quiver, which makes it necessary for the people of knowledge who carry the proofs of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and those who arise with the task of explaining His legislative Laws to abandon flattery of the people of innovation who adopt the positions of the evil Madhahib, who depart from (acting upon) the Book and the Sunnah and give precedence to pure opinion over them.
غالب هؤلاء وإن أظهر قبولا وأبان من أخلاقه لينا لا يرضيه إلا اتباع بدعته والدخول في مداخله والوقوع
Although the majority of these individuals (from the people of innovation) feign agreement and show the gentle side of their character, nothing pleases them except that their innovation is (engaged and) followed, entering into their ways and getting caught in their nets.
في حبائله فإن فعل العالم ذلك بعد أن علمه الله من العلم ما يستفيد به أن هدى الله هو ما في كتابه وسنة رسوله لا ما هم عليه من تلك البدع التي هي ضلالة محضة وجهالة بينة ورأي منهار وتقليد على شفا جرف هار فهو إذ ذاك ما له من الله من ولي ولا نصير ومن كان كذلك فهو مخذول لا محالة وهالك بلا شك ولا شبهة
If (the scholar) was to do this after Allaah has given him knowledge that allows him to recognise the guidance of Allaah that which is found in the Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger – and not that which they are upon that consists of pure innovation, clear ignorance, ignoble opinion and blind following on the edge of a bank about to collapse – then the one who does this will have no protector or helper against Allaah. Whosoever is like this is forsaken for certainty and doomed without any doubt and reservation.” [Fath Al-Qadeer, 1/176-177]
What causes someone to endear towards the people of innovation at the expense of the truth?
Imam as-Sijzee (d. 444H) said: “And how many [people] sell their religion for a lowly price or to endear themselves to those who are perceived to be larger in number.” [Risalah al-Imam as-Sijzi ila ahl-Zubayd fī-Radd ʿala man Ankara al-Ḥarf waṣ-Ṣawt – benefit #16, p. 231-234]
Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim said: “Verily the following of desires blinds the vision of the heart so it will not be able to differentiate between Sunnah and innovation, or it is that it sees innovation as Sunnah and Sunnah as innovation. This is a plague (that affects the) scholars if they give preference to the life of this world and chase after positions and lusts.” [Al-Fawaa’id, p. 244, (Daar Ibn Al-Jawzee)]
Allaah سبحانه و تعالى warned us against this path when He Said:
فَخَلَفَ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ خَلْفٌ وَرِثُواْ الْكِتَابَ يَأْخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَـذَا الأدْنَى وَيَقُولُونَ سَيُغْفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن يَأْتِهِمْ عَرَضٌ مُّثْلُهُ يَأْخُذُوهُ أَلَمْ يُؤْخَذْ عَلَيْهِم مِّيثَاقُ الْكِتَابِ أَن لاَّ يِقُولُواْ عَلَى اللّهِ إِلاَّ الْحَقَّ وَدَرَسُواْ مَا فِيهِ وَالدَّارُ الآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ أَفَلاَ تَعْقِلُونَ
“Then they were succeeded by an (evil) generation, which inherited the Book, but they chose (for themselves) the goods of this low life (evil pleasures of this world) saying (as an excuse): “(Everything) will be forgiven for us.” And if a similar offer came their way (to indulge in the evil of this world), they would yet (again) seize it. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them that they would not say about Allaah anything but the truth? And they have studied what is in it (the Book). And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who are pious. Do you not understand?” [Surat al-A’raaf:169]
The Imam of Ahlus-Sunnah in his time, Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Khalaf Al-Barbahari (d. 329H) stated in his monumental work, ‘Sharhus-Sunnah’, point 150 (Maktabatur-Rushd, 1429H/2008):
رأى يونس بن عبيد ابنه وقد خرج من عند صاحب هوى فقال يا بني من أين خرجت قال من عند عمرو بن عبيد قال يا بني لأن أراك خرجت من بيت خنثى أحب إلي من أن أراك خرجت من بيت فلان وفلان ولأن تلقى الله زانيا سارقا خائنا أحب إلي من أن تلقاه بقول أهل الأهواء .
ألا ترى أن يونس بن عبيد قد علم أن الخنثى لا يضل ابنه عن دينه وأن صاحب البدعة يضله حتى يكفر
“Yoonus bin ‘Ubayd saw his son exiting the house of a person of desires (i.e misguidance) so he said: “O my son! From where have you just exited?” He replied: “From the company of ‘Amr ibn ‘Ubaid.” So he said: “O my son. That I had seen you exiting the house of shameless and lewd person would have been more beloved to me than that I see you exiting the house of so-and-so! That you should meet Allaah, O my son, as a fornicator, a sinner, a thief or as a treacherous soul is more beloved to me than that you should meet him with a saying of the people of desires.” Do you not see that Yoonus ibn ‘Ubayd knew that the shameless and lewd person would not misguide his son away from the Deen, whereas the person of innovation (i.e. bid’ah) would misguide him until he causes him to disbelieve.”
