Until the covering is lifted

Said in His Noble Book:

“and there will become apparent to them from Allaah, what they had not been reckoning.” [Az-Zumar: 47]

This Ayah bore down heavily on our Salaf (so much so that) ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه said: “If I had the dominion of whole earth, I would gladly ransom (it) for the terror of the unveiling.”

“Indeed you were heedless of this, now We have removed your covering, and sharp is your sight this Day!” [Qaaf: 22]

Some servants, when they meet Allaah, will confront things they never expected. They could be unaware of what their hands have wrought; not paying it any attention until the covering is lifted.

Ibn Awn said (in his line of prose):

“Do not feel secure because of great number of deeds,
for you do not know if they have been accepted or not.

Do not feel secure about your sins,
for you do not know if they have been expiated or not.

This is because all of your deeds are unseen to you,
and you have no idea what Allaah will do with them.”

Amir Ibn Abd Qays and others from the Salaf would be greatly apprehensive of this Ayah.

“Verily, Allaah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqoon.” [5-27]

“…how many are the people who think they worked righteous deeds yet on the day of Judgement they are gathered together and thrown on their face.” [Abu Nu’ayam, vol 3 p.360]
