Allaah turned away from him

While the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم sat in the masjid talking (to his Companions), a group of three people came. The first person turned (from the other two) and saw a gap in the majlis of Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and sat down. The second of the (remaining) two also saw a gap and sat behind (the first); and the third one walked away from the gathering. When the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم finished (his speech) he said: “Shall I not inform you of the three?” As for the first one, he seeks shelter and (in return) Allaah shelters him. The second person was shy with Allaah and (in return) Allaah was the same with him. And the third person turned away from Allaah and (in return) Allaah turned away from him.”

[Saheeh al-Bukhari, 66; Saheeh Muslim, 2176; Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2724]

1. From the profound benefits of this hadeeth is the warning contained therein for anyone who walks away from knowledge while having the ability to remain. If Allaah turned away from the person who shunned a circle of beneficial knowledge in only one instance, then what about the individual who abandons learning the Qur’an and the guidance of the Messenger And, what about the condition of the person who turns away from acting in accordance with Islam?

If they show disinterest in Islamic knowledge, then they only turn to and seek secular knowledge. If they unite, they only unite on worldly concerns. If they listen, they only pay attention to current affairs. If they read, they only read news tabloids and journals, which in turn, may increase them in deviation. In our times, the phenomenon of turning away from the Qur’an and Sunnah has spread. So where will the guidance come from for those people who turn away? We take this (complaint) issue of the strangeness of today’s people towards Islam to Allaah alone.

Whoever wants to fully understand this matter (i.e. Deen) then let him follow the caravan of the traveller to Allaah; but if this path is not apparent, then let him hasten to the truth (outwardly and inwardly) upon which there is no ambiguity.

2. Allaah turns His Mercy and Forgiveness away from the one who shuns gatherings of knowledge; and the Angels do not lower their wings over the one who does not seek knowledge. Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله تعالى said: “The gatherings where Allaah is mentioned are the gatherings of angels, while gatherings that are full of chatter and heedlessness are the gatherings of devils. Let the servant decide which of these (two gatherings) is more pleasing and important to him, for he will belong to it in this world and the next “ [Aabil al-Sayyib min al-Kalim at-Tayyib]

3. In explaining a point about the three people (in original hadeeth), Ibn Abd al-Barr writes in his ‘Al-Istidhkar’ (1797) [see 1/144 (#40558)]:

4. In a beautiful hadeeth Qudsi (no. 14), we read that Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Allaah, Glorified and Exalted, has additional Angels who rove about (the earth) seeking out gatherings in which Allaah’s Name is being invoked: they sit with them and fold their wings round each other, filling in that which is between them and between the lowest heaven. When (the people in the gathering) depart, (the Angels) ascend up to Heaven.” He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Then Allaah, Mighty and Sublime, Asks them (even though) He is most Knowing about them: ‘From where have you come?’ And they say: ‘We have come from some servants of Yours on earth: they were glorifying (Subhan Allaah) You, exalting you (Allaahu akbar), witnessing that there is no deity except You (La ilaha illallah), praising You (Al-Hamdulillah), and asking (supplicating) of You.’ He says: ‘And what do they ask of Me?’ They say: ‘They ask You for Your Paradise.’ He Says: ‘And have they seen My Paradise?’ They say: ‘No, O Lord.’ He says: ‘And how would it be were they to have seen My Paradise!’ They say: ‘And they ask protection of You.’ He says: ‘From what do they ask protection of Me?’ They say: ‘From Your Hell-fire, O Lord.’ He says: ‘And have they seen My Hell-fire?’ They say: ‘No.’ He says: ‘And how would it be were they to have seen My Hell-fire!’ They say: ‘And they ask for Your forgiveness.'” He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Then He says: ‘I have forgiven them and I have bestowed upon them what they have asked for, and I have granted them sanctuary from that from which they asked protection.'” He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “They say: ‘O Lord, among them is so-and-so, a much sinning servant, who was merely passing by and sat down with them.'” He (the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “And He says: ‘And to him (too) I have given Forgiveness: he who sits with such people shall not suffer.'” [Saheeh Muslim, 4861 and others]

And Allaah is the Source of all Guidance.
