Allaah سبحانه و تعالى Says in the Noble Qur’an:

“Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children. (It is) as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allah and Good Pleasure (for the believers). And the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment.” [Al-Hadeed: 20]

.

He سبحانه و تعالى also Says:

“And the life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a thing that deceives).” [Aal Imraan: 185]

.

He سبحانه و تعالى also Says:

“Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But little is the enjoyment of the life of this world as compared to the Hereafter.” [At-Tawbah: 38]

.

He سبحانه و تعالى also Says:

“…and they rejoice in the life of the world, whereas the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter is but a brief passing enjoyment.” [Ar-Ra’d: 26]

.

He سبحانه و تعالى also Says:

“And whatever you have been given is an enjoyment of the life of (this) world and its adornment, and that (Hereafter) which is with Allah is better and will remain forever. Have you then no sense?” [Al Qasas: 60]

.

He سبحانه و تعالى also Mentions the words spoken by a believing man when he said:

“O my people! Truly, this life of the world is nothing but a (quick passing) enjoyment, and verily, the Hereafter that is the home that will remain forever.” [Ghaafir: 39]

.

1. Anas bin Malik رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“As the son of Adam ages, two of his desires grow, the greed for wealth and the greed for life.” [Ibn Majah,  4232; Musnad Ahmad, 13428; Shu’ab al-Imaan, 9587 and others – graded as saheeh by al-Albani in ‘Saheeh Targheeb’, 2339]

2. Imam ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله تعالى in his ‘Uddat as-Saabireen’ mentions Yahya Ibn Mu’ad ar-Raazi who stated:

“The (life of this) world is the Shaytan’s khamr (intoxicant). Whoever is intoxicated (by its sweetness) will not wake up (regain consciousness) until they are in the ranks of the dead, in a state of regret, among the losers.”

Ibn al-Qayyim then states:

“The (intoxicating effect of) loving this world is greater than the intoxication that results from drinking alcohol by a long way. The one who is intoxicated (by this world) will not awake until he is in the darkness of the grave, if he awakens and the effects cease while he is alive, then he will appreciate the extent of intoxication this worldly life can cause and that it is severe than the khamr…”

He said elsewhere: “Numerous narrations have been transmitted from the rightly guided predecessors where (they have mentioned) that the love of this world is the root of sins and the source of them.”

He continued: “The love of this world and leadership is that which has filled the Hell-fire with its inhabitants, and the practice of abstinence as it relates to the life of this world and leadership is that which has filled Paradise with its inhabitants.”

3. Ibn Jawzi wrote in his ‘Fada’il ad-Dhikr’ that one of the Salaf said:

“O son of Adam! You need your share in this life, but need your share in the Hereafter even more. If you took care of your share in this life, then you will lose your share in the Hereafter and are soon bound to lose your share in this life too. If you took care of your share in the Hereafter, you will also win your full share in this life with ease.”

Ibn Katheer said in his Tafseer [4/197]:

“It is nature of the dunya is that it flees from the one who chases her, and it chases the one who flees from her.”

4. Imaam ash-Shaafi’ee رحمه الله تعالى wrote some beautiful lines of poetry thus:

“O my soul. It is not, except a few days of patience,
As if the extent were but a few dreams.
O my soul. Pass quickly on through this world,
And leave it, for indeed life lies ahead of it.”

[Related by Ibn Rajab in ‘Fadl ‘Ilm as-Salaf’]

.

5. Ibn al-Qayyim said that Bishr Bin Haarith said:

“The people of the Hereafter are three: The Aabid, the Zaahid and the Siddeeq.

The Aabid worships Allaah whilst being attached to searching for provision. The Zaahid worships Him whilst keeping away from attachment to the worldly things. The Siddeeq worships Him with pleasure and conformity, he takes from the worldly things when he sees it fit to (do so) and abandons it when he sees it fit…” [Al-Fawaa-id: page: 175]

The misery that the epidemic of capitalist materialism has wrought upon the world is even attested to by the non-Muslims. Yet many within the Ummah continue to embrace this disease in the sure certainty of death. They fail to understand that true happiness can only be achieved through what has been given by Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم

6. The attachment to, and love of this world (and its mortal pleasures) does not however mean, we should completely cut ourselves off from the necessities of life

7. A hearty modern-day parable

.

May Allaah make us amongst those who understand the realities of this world.
