Towards the Messenger

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الحمد لله رب العالمين وصلى الله وسلم على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن اهتدى بهديه إلى يوم الدين أما بعد

Abu Rashid al-Hubraani رضي الله عنه narrated that Abu Umama al-Bahili رضي الله عنه took him by the hand and said: “The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم took me by my hand and said to me:

“O Abu Umama! Indeed from the believers are those who soften (with love) their hearts towards me.”
[Musnad Ahmad; authenticated in ‘Silsilah As-Saheehah’]

1. “Soften their hearts towards me” is that we show utmost respect and care and are gentle and incline towards him صلى الله عليه وسلم with love and affection. As he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his family, wealth and all the people.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

2. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “If anyone possesses three qualities, he will experience the sweetness of emaan; that Allaah and His Messenger are dearer to him than anything else, that he loves another person solely for Allaah’s sake, and that he hates lapsing into disbelief as much as he would hate being cast into the Fire.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

3. And how unique the Sahabah were in their love. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم once came to Thawban رضي الله عنهم and noticed that he looked sad, so he صلى الله عليه وسلم asked him, “O Thawban, what has changed your appearance?” Thawban replied, “O Messenger of Allaah, I do not have any sickness or any pain except that I feel discomfort when I do not see you, so I seclude myself completely until I meet you. Then I remembered the Hereafter and was afraid that I would not see you there. I know that you will be with the Prophets, and if I enter Jannah, I will be in a level lower than yours. But if I do not enter Jannah, then I will never see you again.”

So Allaah سبحانه و تعالى revealed:

“And whoso obeys Allaah and the Messenger, then they will be in the company of those on whom Allaah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqoon, the martyrs and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!” [translation of An-Nisa’: 69]

[Narrated by Ibn Asakir in his ‘Tareekh’]

See ‘Silsilat al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah’, 2933

Some Lessons derived from this narration:

4. And this love and affection can not be achieved except with ikhlaas and ittiba’ of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم over all other creation. Because Allaah سبحانه و تعالى singled this out as an inherent evidence to prove a person’s love for Allaah: “Say (O Muhammad): ‘If you (really) love Allaah then follow me, Allaah will love you and forgive you of your sins.” [translation of Aal Imran: 31]

5. Is it not time for those who claim to love the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم – in their speech and in their (inappropriately rendered) nasheeds or dance or parades of mawlid, that they return to adhere to the true love for the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم that will lead to the love of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى

6. The poet said:

“You disobey your Lord and present your love. I swear that this action is innovative. If your love was truthful you would have obeyed Him. Indeed the one who loves is obedient to the one whom he loves.

7. From the most fundamental of matters pertaining to love is (unconditional) acceptance, understanding and applying the comprehensive i’tiqad (belief) which the the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم established for mankind through his Lord

8. One of the best Shama’il works is from Imam Tirmidhi entitled “al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyyah”, which can be found here:

Arabic (Famous sharh of  Ibraheem ibn Muhammad al-Bajuri al-Shafi’i ‘al-Mawahib al-Ladunniyyah ‘ala al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyyah’)

English excerpt

May Allaah make us amongst those whose love for the Messenger transpires through our beliefs and actions upon the way of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم and his Sahabah.
